Gujarat Titans pacer Mohit Sharma scripted an unwanted record in the Indian Premier League when his side faced hosts Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Mohit, who has plenty of experience and prowess, registered the most expensive spell in the league’s history. Mohit gave away 73 runs from his four overs as Rishabh Pant took him to the cleaners with a whirlwind knock of 88*. Mohit broke the record of former Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Basil Thampi, who conceded 70 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2018. Mohit failed to take a single wicket in what was an off day.
As per ESPNcricinfoonly six bowlers have conceded more runs in a T20 innings than Mohit. Matthew Harry McKiernan of Derbyshire gave away 82 runs for his 4 overs against Somerset in 2022.
The Capitals scored 224/4 in 20 overs as Axar Patel and Pant hammered clutch fifties. Tristan Stubbs also stood out with a fiery cameo. Barring Mohit, no other DC bowler conceded more than 36 runs. In response, GT almost pulled off a heist but fell short by four runs in the end. Rasikh Salam claimed 3/44 for DC.
On the same note, we present bowlers with the most expensive spells in IPL history.
Mohit Sharma (73 runs vs GT)
As mentioned, Mohit now holds the top spot in giving away the most runs in an innings. The veteran pacer was brought on in the 12th over and started by conceding 12 runs. In the 16th over, Mohit conceded 16 runs as Pant damaged his confidence. The following Mohit over saw DC score 14 before 31 runs were hit in the final over. Mohit gave away four sixes and a four in the 20th over, seeing DC surpass 200.
It was Pant who shook Mohit by hammering seven sixes and three fours. Out of the 16 sixes GT conceded, Mohit gave away seven. Mohit also conceded four fours. His economy rate was 18.25. Notably, Pant owned a strike rate 344.44 versus Mohit in this match. He scored 62 runs from 18 balls.
Basil Thampi (70 runs vs RCB)
In the 2018 IPL season, SRH pacer Thampi was thrashed by the RCB batters as they scored 218/6 in 20 overs. The likes of AB de Villiers and Mooed Ali smashed breezy fifties as Colin de Grandhomme and Sarfaraz Khan lit up the scenes with cameos. Thampi was the worst performer with the ball, as he gave away five fours and six sixes. He bowled only two dot balls, and his economy rate was 17.50.
Thampi was introduced in the 8th over and gave away 19 runs. Mooen welcomed him to the crease with two sixes. He was brought back in the 13th over, and 18 runs were conceded. In the 16th over, Thampi then gave away 14 runs but did well to finish with two dots. Thampi bowled the 19th over and conceded two sixes and a four alongside three singles.
SRH lost the match by 14 runs.
Yash Dayal (69 runs vs KKR)
In the IPL 2023 season, Yash Dayal went on to concede 69 runs for no wicket against KKR. The GT pacer’s sorry returns helped KKR win a stunning three-wicket win. GT managed 204/4 in 20 overs before KKR won by three wickets off the final ball. Rinku Singh’s magic floored the Titans in Ahmedabad.
Dayal conceded at 17.25 and gave away three fours and eight sixes. He bowled four dot balls. KKR were down and out, and Umesh Yadav handed the strike to Rinku Singh, who had five balls to face in the final over. Rinku stepped up and hit five successive sixes. KKR needed 28 from five balls.
Before that, Dayal bowled the 12th over and went on to concede 17 as Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana punished the left-arm pacer. Notably, Dayal had a decent second over (10th), conceding only 8. Dayal was introduced right after the power play when he gave away 13.
Reece Topley (68 runs vs SRH)
Earlier this season, RCB pacer Reece Topley scripted an unwanted record. He conceded 68 runs from four overs, becoming the first RCB bowler and the first foreign player in IPL to concede this many. Topley picked one wicket, though. SRH smashed the highest IPL score in this match, breaking their record. They managed 287/3 in Hyderabad. Led By Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen, SRH toyed with the RCB bowlers. Four RCB bowlers conceded above 50 runs in this match.
Topley, who dismissed Abhishek Sharma and broke a 108-run opening stand, was dispatched everywhere. He conceded six fours and five sixes in addition to bowling only three dots.
Topley was creamed by Abdul Samad in his final over, which was in the 19th innings. Samad hit him for 4,4,6,4, and 4 after Aiden Markram got a single off the first ball. Before that, the Englishman bowled the 16th over, which was decent under the circumstances (12 runs). In the 9th over of the match, Topley got Abhishek’s scalp and conceded 11. Earlier, he bowled the second over of the game and started poorly, giving away 20. Abhishek and Head started SRH’s onslaught in this very over.
In the end, SRH prevailed in a run fest. RCB gave a fight and posted 262/7 in 20 overs.
