MANCHESTER, England (AP) —  Former England captain Michael Atherton feels Rishabh Pant’s injury is not good for India. He retired hurt after being unable to continue with the injured foot on the opening day of the fourth test against England on Wednesday.

The southpaw was batting on 37 at Old Trafford when he went for a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes’ yorker-length delivery, and it deflected onto his right ankle and foot.

England appealed for lbw, but the batter survived. Pant was in pain in the middle, and after treatment by the team’s physio, he left on a cart. There was swelling on his foot. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja replaced him with India on 212-3.

The 27-year-old had built a strong partnership with Sai Sudharsan as the Indian National Cricket Team recovered after losing three wickets in the second session of the day.

India’s openers KL Rahul and Jaiswal kept the hosts on the backfoot after being invited to bat first and reached 78-0 at lunch.

England found success with spinner Liam Dawson taking his first Test wicket in eight years after returning to the national team.

Speaking to Sky Cricket at stumps, Atherton mentioned that if Pant is ruled out of the match or the series, it could be a big blow for India.

“If he is out of the match or the series, it is going to be a big blow for India. They are 264/4, but it would become 264/5 if he doesn’t come out to bat. With the new ball due, England will have a chance to dismiss India. But if Pant returns, he could change the game. We have no information available on his injury. But it looked like a serious injury, because you don’t get carted off,” he said. For India, Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan scored fifties.
