The U19 captain, Ayush Mhatre, went on to break Brendon McCullum’s record of the third fastest century in Youth Test history. Only Moeen Ali (56 balls) and Suryavanshi (58) have recorded quicker Youth Test hundreds.
He went on to score 126 runs off 80 deliveries, which included 13 fours and 6 sixes. With a total haul of 206 runs, Mhatre became just the second batter after McCullum to score more than 200 runs in a Youth Test with a strike rate of more than 100.
He had a strike rate of 121.17 as compared to McCullum’s 108.41 in a Youth Test against South Africa in 2001. The New Zealand U19 skipper McCullum went on to score 186 runs off 172 deliveries in the first innings.
In the second innings he hit 46 not out from 42 balls in the second innings. Mhatre smashed nine sixes in the contest, breaking the record of Manoj Tiwary for registering most sixes in a Youth Test.
India came close on pulling off a stunning heist on Wednesday as they racked up 290/6 in 43 oves before light deprived them of a chance to reel in the remaining 65 runs.
Meanwhile Vaibhav Suryavanshi had a modest outing in the match. The 14-year old scored 20 runs across two innings.
Apart from Mhatre, wicketeeper Abhigyan Kundu was also in blistering nick as he made a quickfire 65 runs off 46 deliveries. However the wicket of Mhatre triggered a mini collapse and India settled for a draw.
Ayush Mhatre has a brilliant stint with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025, scoring 240 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 188, and his performance inthe Youth series proved that he was not a one-season wonder, but will be one of the stars of Indian cricket across formats.
Both unofficial tests between India and England U19 ended in draws. India had won the ODI series 3-2. In the five match series, Suryavans was the star of the show scoring 355 runs in five matches, including a 143-run knock in the fourth ODI.
