The selectors have approached the 29-year-old Jagadeesan after Ishan Kishan, the initial backup, suffered an ankle injury and was ruled unfit for selection.
Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batter N Jagadeesan is expected to be called up as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant, who will be unavailable for the fifth Test due to a fractured metatarsal. Pant picked up the injury while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Sources have informed TimesofIndia.com that the selectors have approached the 29-year-old Jagadeesan after Ishan Kishan, the initial backup, suffered an ankle injury and was ruled unfit for selection.
Since Jagadeesan currently doesn’t have a visa, it may take a few days for the application process to be completed on an expedited basis. Priority visa applications are typically completed within 48 hours, so it seems unlikely that he will reach the UK before the current Test match in Manchester comes to an end.
A source monitoring the situation informed Timesofindia.com that “Jagadeesan has been undergoing training at the Sri Ramakrishna Engineering College (SREC) ground in Coimbatore for the past 10 days”.
“During this time, he focused solely on improving his batting and wicket-keeping, after having played in the middle-order in the recent edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL)”.
“In the afternoon, Jagadeesan received a call from the BCCI, notifying him of his selection for the Indian team for the Test tour of England”
The BCCI has collected all the essential details from Jagadeesan.
“He is currently waiting for his visa, as all other formalities have been completed”.
“Jagadeesan was thrilled about his selection in the squad but is currently sticking to his usual routine. After receiving the news, he attended his regular practice session and went through the drills”.
“Rishabh Pant, who injured his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be taking on wicket-keeping duties for the rest of the series.”
