India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has started his recovery process by hitting the nets for the first time at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru since his hernia surgery in June.

The 34-year-old is attempting to return to full condition. The right-hander’s availability has been uncertain after he travelled to the UK earlier this year for sports hernia surgery.

However, his recent participation at the Centre of Excellence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hints that he is making good progress.

The BCCI medical team is believed to be working closely with strength and conditioning coaches to managed his return carefully and avoid any relapse.

He was left out of the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy 2025. The Mumbai batter had already checked into the NCA for rehabilitation, indicating that a return to domestic cricket was currently out of the question.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan are among the veteran players on the West Zone team, which is captained by Shardul Thakur.

He posted a 717 runs for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025 earlier this year, stands second in the list next to Sai Sudharsan.

He also become the second MI batter to score over 600 runs in a season, after Sachin Tendulkar. His performance including their victory against Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator before losing the second qualifier was crucial in getting Mumbai to the playoffs.

The Asia Cup 2025 marks the start of India’s runway to next year’s T20 World Cup, which they co-host with Sri Lanka. If he plays, it will be Suryakumar’s first multi-nation tournament as T20I captain since taking over the leadership in the shortest format from Rohit Sharma following their T20 World Cup in 2024.

The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to begin on September 9 with India’s first match will be against UAE on September 10, 2025 at Dubai International Stadium.
