With speculation over Rohit Sharma’s ODI retirement remaining unresolved, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled a post promoting India’s white-ball tour of England 2026 featuring both England’s captain Harry Brook and India’s current ODI captain Rohit Sharma.

The image has fans wondering if Rohit Sharma is front and centre in 2026, could he remain ODI captain through the 2027 World Cup?

Rohit Sharma has already announced T20I retirement following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win and stepped away from Test cricket after the Australia series.

ICC have since taken down the post for unknown reasons. The plot thickens with prior insights from India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir. He emphasised that planning for 2027 is premature.

“We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament, which is going to happen in India in February-March.”

“So, the entire focus at the moment—after England—will be on the T20 World Cup. And November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away,” said Gautam Gambhir.

“if you keep performing, age is just a number,” he added. The Indian side has been entering into transition phase with the retirement of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

The BCCI has put Shubman Gill as India’s test captain ahead of the England series where the side levelled the series 2-2.

Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav has been the captain of the T20I side after Rohit named his T20I retirement.

It remains to be seen, Rohit Sharma will be donning the leadership in ODI format until 2027 World Cup, but the ICC’s poster and Gautam gambhir‘s stance has given fans plenty to ponder.
