Bumrah played only three matches against England under the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Incidentally, India won the two matches in which they did not play.
Delhi: Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin has said that if there is a problem of injury, then the board and the player should decide how to handle it, but once, when the player is selected in the Indian team, he should not have the right to play which matches he should play and who leaves. Azharuddin’s statement has come amidst the ongoing debate about the workload management of star fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah.
Bumrah played only three matches against England under the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Incidentally, India won the two matches in which they did not play. He took a total of 14 wickets in the series and was the fourth most successful bowler.
Bumrah took five wickets in the first match of the series (Handingley), while in Lord’s Test he took four wickets. However, India lost both matches.
Azharuddin told Mid-Day, “If there is a problem of injury, the board and the player will have to decide. But, I believe that after coming to the team you cannot choose the match. Workload is definitely there, but you should manage it at this level.”
He further said, “You are playing for the country. It is a different matter that Siraj, Famous Krishna and Akashdeep took advantage of the opportunity and we won without Bumrah. But, if India needs Bumrah in any important situation, if it needs Bumrah?”
