Former India captain Kapil Dev has urged the Delhi and NCR officials to find proper ways to manage stray dogs, following a recent Supreme Court verdict. The country’s apex court told the Delhi government and MCD to catch stray dogs and put them in shelters. The order has sparked debate among animal lovers, who feel that there are not enough facilities to keep dogs.
The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper made an emotional appeal for the street dogs. “I have heard a lot of things about the dogs. For me, they are the most beautiful creatures, and they deserve a better life. I request authorities to take care of them and don’t throw them out,” Kapil Dev said.
In 2023, he appealed to the Delhi High Court, challenging provisions in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act that allowed the destruction of street dogs. He was disturbed by the killing of a pregnant stray dog in Delhi in 2022. He also took the matter to the Supreme Court of India.
He wants the construction of shelters, improved support and care policies that can ensure the safety of the public without compromising the well-being of the dogs.
