Delhi: The speculation of implementation of Split captaincy in Indian cricket has intensified, in which different captains can be appointed for Tests, ODIs and T20s. Meanwhile, former opener Akash Chopra has opposed this, saying that the team performs better in cricket under the leadership of the same captain for a long time.

‘Captain’s role in cricket is different from football’

On his YouTube channel, Akash Chopra clarified that the captain’s role in cricket is very important. He said, “The captain’s importance in football is less, because the manager outposes out of the field. But, in cricket, the captain has to take immediate decisions on the field. Here the ability to make early decision with understanding and experience is very important, so there should be continuity in captaincy.”

Chopra’s suggestion

Akash Chopra suggested that Team India can keep a captain for Test and a captain for white ball cricket (ODI and T20). However, appointing a separate captain for each format can create confusion for the players. He said that if different captains, players will have to keep pace with new strategy and style every time, which can affect the performance.

Impact on players

Giving examples, Chopra said that KL Rahul and Shubman Gill play Test, while players like Mohammad Siraj and Jaspreet Bumrah play all three formats. In such a situation, it can be difficult for them to mold themselves according to the plans of different captains, which can break their rhythm and have a direct effect on the game.

Currently, three captains, what next?

Currently in Team India, Rohit Sharma is captaining ODI, Shubman Gill Test and Suryakumar Yadav T20I. According to reports, Rohit Sharma can retire from ODI cricket soon. In such a situation, the big question is who will be the next ODI captain of India?
