Delhi: The Asia Cup 2025 is going to begin this time in T20 format from September 9. The Indian team can be announced on 19 August for Asia’s largest cricket tournament. This team selection will not be easy for the chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his committee, as there are many options on every slot.
According to reports, the place of young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is also not confirmed. Meanwhile, former Indian opener and commentator Akash Chopra has clearly stated that Jaiswal is a better option than Shubman Gill in terms of T20 format.
On his YouTube channel, Akash Chopra said, “According to me, Yashasvi Jaiswal is more suitable for the Asia Cup. It is very important to have a third opener with the team. If Abhishek Sharma or Sanju Samson is not in the form, then who will open?
He further said that if the selectors are confused between Gill and Jaiswal, then the figures and the team’s DNA goes in favor of Jaiswal.
Gill is currently the captain of the Test team and the Vice -captain of the ODI team. In such a situation, it is not considered right to keep him out of the playing XI by joining him as a third opener. On the other hand, Jaiswal has constantly proved his potential in T20 format.
23 -year -old Yashasvi Jaiswal has so far scored 723 runs in 22 innings of 23 T20 matches at a strike rate of 164.32, including a century. At the same time, Shubman Gill has scored 578 runs in 21 T20I matches at a strike rate of 139.28. His highest score has been 126 runs.
The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar has to announce the team on August 19. Looking at Gill’s performance on England tour, it is difficult to ignore him, while it will not be easy to keep Jaiswal out on the basis of a great strike rate and continuity in T20. It is clear that Agarkar will have to take many strict decisions in team selection.
