After an exciting 2-2 draw in the Test series against England, the Indian cricket team is now gearing up for the highly anticipated Asia Cup. The tournament, scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28. India will be aiming to secure a record-extending 9th title. In 2023, India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final held in Colombo.

The squad for the tournament is expected to be announced on August 19, according to a report by the Times of India. The report suggests that players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shreyas Iyer will be ignored, as the team management seems determined to stick with the current T20I opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma.

Gill and Jaiswal last featured in a T20I match about a year ago, while Iyer’s last appearance in the format was in December 2023. At present, Iyer is only being considered for ODIs, while Gill and Jaiswal continue to be part of the national team for Tests.

If this report proves accurate and Iyer is once again left out, it will be another disappointment for the player, who was not a part of the recent England Test series. Gill has played 21 T20Is, scoring 578 runs, while Jaiswal has scored 723 runs in 23 matches. Shreyas Iyer, on the other hand, has made 1104 runs in 51 games, at an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12.
