Delhi: Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said a lot about the workload management of Team India fast bowler Jaspreet Bumrah. He clearly said that Indian cricket should not change for Bumrah, but Bumrah should change himself.
Recently, in the Test series against England, Bumrah played in only three matches. It was already decided that he would play only 3 Tests out of 5. When the last and decisive Test took place at the Oval, the fans hoped that Bumrah would play, but he was rested and released from the squad as well.
Manjrekar said that it was a way “Poetic Justice” that in the two Tests in which Bumrah did not play, India won. This also proves that no player is mandatory. He said that “Indian selectors have got a lesson from this series. India won matches in which neither Virat Kohli, nor Pujara, nor Rohit Sharma, nor Mohammed Shami nor Bumrah were.”
Manjrekar believes that the time has come that the selectors take strict decisions with big names. He says that “the player who cannot play two consecutive Tests should not make the first choice.”
He further said that the players who are fit, are excited to play and are ready to perform, they should be given priority. Manjrekar said, “By giving such players a chance, the morale of the team will also increase and the team will benefit for a long time.”
Manjrekar also said that in this series, Akash Deep and Mohammad Siraj left an impact like Bumrah. He said that “maybe it may not happen every time, but this should give the selectors the courage to do the same with the elders that they do with others.”
Regarding Bumrah, Manjrekar said that if he wants to play in Test cricket for a long time, he will have to work more on his fitness and strength. He said, “A true athlete is identified when he does not get completely fit and performs well.”
In the end Manjrekar said that “Indian cricket should not run according to Bumrah, but Bumrah should be dedicated to the team by changing himself.” He also added that “if Bumrah wants, he can do his fitness further, as all the great fast bowlers have done.”
