West Indies cricket, once a powerhouse in the sport, is battling crises for a long time. After a disappointing series against Australia, where the team lost the Test series and the five T20Is, cricket legend Brian Lara has called for action from Cricket West Indies (CWI). He wants the board to seek Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Kieron Pollard”s help guide the next generation of players.
At the end of a CWI conference, Lara emphasised the weight of the responsibility he feels in aiding the team’s recovery. “It’s an honour to be asked to contribute to the future of West Indies cricket, especially at such a crucial time. I fully embrace the opportunity to serve,” Lara said.
Lara highlighted that the issues affecting West Indies cricket extend beyond the team’s performances on the field. He stressed that the decline is rooted in deeper cultural, psychological, and structural problems that have affected the sport in the Caribbean for the past two decades.
“We must recognise that the challenges confronting West Indies cricket extend far beyond inconsistent performances on the field. They are deeply rooted in cultural, psychological, and structural shifts that have evolved over the past two decades. If we are truly committed to reversing this decline, then we must be prepared to draw from a wider pool of experience and contemporary insight,” Lara wrote on Instagram.
Lara specifically advocated for the inclusion of Gayle, Bravo, and Pollard, pointing out that their modern-day cricket experience is invaluable. He noted that their direct connection with today’s players, having played together in the same teams, gives them a unique understanding of the ambitions, challenges, and motivations of the current generation of cricketers.
“I believe Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard possess a unique and timely perspective that can prove invaluable. These men have not only played at the highest level, but have done so in an era that reflects the modern athlete’s psyche, ambitions, and motivations. Their proximity to today’s players — in terms of generational alignment and shared dressing rooms — gives them an authentic understanding of what drives, distracts, or disillusions the modern West Indian cricketers,” he added in an Instagram post.
Lara urged CWI to take swift action. “The time to act is now, but we must act together,” he concluded.
