Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Ajit Agarkar for appointing Shubman Gill as vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, calling it a good decision.

Gavaskar was pleased with the selectors and the team management for calling back Gill into the T20I side and handing him a leadership role.

“He scored over 750 runs in England and you can’t exclude a player like him. Making him a deputy is a way of preparing him for T20I captaincy. I think it is a good selection,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar highlighted Gill’s temperament. “He was impressive in England as a leader. He led the side for the first time and didn’t break down under pressure. Gill is destined to lead India across formats in the future,” he added.

He replaced Axar Patel as vice-captain in the shortest format of the game. Gill will open the batting with Abhishek Sharma in the team’s opening match against the UAE  on 10 September.
