Recently, in Ravichandran Ashwin’s show ‘Kutti Stories with Ash’, Dravid was asked what he got the most difficult bowler in his career. After thinking for some time, he took the name of two veterans – Glenn McGrath of Australia and Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka.
Dravid said, “Glenn McGrath was the most difficult among the fast bowlers. I played Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis in the last round of his career, so it is a little difficult to compare. But I played McGrath on their peaks. He used to challenge my off stump the most. His line, length and fitness were fantastic. He used to bowl on the same level all day. He was the most difficult in terms of consistency. “
Talking about spinners, Dravid said, “Muralitharan was the spinner against whom he could spin the ball on both sides. When he used to put the round the wicket and put ‘another’, it was very difficult to read. He never tired and put long spells. He used to make him special.”
Glenn McGrath played 124 Tests and 250 ODIs for Australia. He took 563 wickets in Tests and 381 wickets in ODIs. He is Australia’s most successful fast bowler in Tests and he also has the highest number of wickets in ODIs.
At the same time, Muralitharan took 800 wickets in Test cricket, 534 in ODIs and 13 wickets in T20. He is the highest wicket -taking bowler in Test cricket.
