There were even claims that the forthcoming tour of Australia in October might serve as a potential farewell.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla has firmly rejected the retirement rumours surrounding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, pointing out that both are still active in ODIs. After their retirements from T20Is and Tests, there has been growing speculation about what the future holds for the two cricketers. There were even claims that the forthcoming tour of Australia in October might serve as a potential farewell.
However, both players have resumed their training ahead of the ODI series, effectively putting such rumours to rest. Sources have also confirmed that the BCCI is in no rush to make decisions regarding the futures of these key players. On a recent talk show, Shukla was asked if Kohli and Rohit would receive a farewell like Sachin Tendulkar.
Shukla questioned why there is concern about their retirements when both players are still participating in ODIs.
“When did they retire? Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still playing ODIs,” Shukla said.
Mr. Shukla also stated that the BCCI never puts pressure on any player.
“The BCCI never forced any player to take retirement. The decision rests with players, and it is for them to make the decision independently,” he added.
He stressed that Kohli remains one of the fittest players in the game, while Rohit continues to perform.
“When the time comes, we’ll guide you on how to handle it. You’re already talking about farewells, but Kohli is fit and continuing his career, while Rohit Sharma is playing well,” he explained.
Kohli and Rohit are anticipated to return when India face Australia in the ODI series scheduled from October 19 to 25.
