Irfan Pathan wants to coach India in the future due to the team’s consistent growth. He played for India across formats and was a part of the 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
His former teammates Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir have coached the Indian National Cricket Team. The sub-continent team won the 2024 T20 World Cup under Dravid and the 2025 Champions Trophy under the coaching of the current coach Gautam Gambhir.
When Pathan was asked about coaching the Indian team in a feature in his conversation with Revsportz, he said:
“Yes, because I want to see growth. Sitting back and watching growth taking place and being involved in it is something that gives me fun.”
Irfan also lauded John Wright, under whose tenure Pathan debuted in 2003. “I like John Wright’s coaching. He used to work hard and keep everyone tight. I have better technical coaches, but his style was different,” he added.
“It was about managing players and other things from behind. It excited me a lot. When the time comes in the future, I would like to become a coach. It will happen,” he concluded.
Wright became the coach in 2000, and India became a dominating team. The Men in Blue finished runners-up in the 2002 Champions Trophy and 2003 ODI World Cup.
