Cricket enthusiasts worldwide were taken aback when seasoned all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin declared his retirement from the Indian Premier League. He began his IPL career in 2009 wearing CSK colours and brought it to a close with the same side in 2025. Over the course of 220 games, Ashwin picked up 187 wickets and scored 833 runs. After bringing an end to his international career in December 2024, he is now reportedly exploring the option of entering the ILT20 auction for the upcoming edition.

Reacting to his unexpected announcement, South African great and Royal Challengers Bengaluru stalwart AB de Villiers commented that Ashwin was at ease with CSK, suggesting he “never found the same rhythm” with other franchises.
“An outstanding career, what a remarkable player. Truly a scientist of the game, almost like a doctor or professor. He always pushed the boundaries of the rulebook and more often than not, got it right, even if some frowned upon it. I deeply respect cricketers who study the game, and he was definitely one of them,” AB de Villiers said.
“An incredible talent, a true giant and icon of Indian cricket. He delivered countless wins for both Team India and CSK. Though he represented other teams, it never quite felt like the right fit. Personally, I believe he should have always stayed with CSK. Of course, those decisions weren’t in his hands, as retentions and selections involve many factors. But for me, he’ll always be remembered in that yellow jersey.”
