Marcus Stoinis has been named in the 14-member Australia Squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand.
He will be accompanied by Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short and Xavier Bartlett for the T20I series in Australia tour of New Zealand 2025, strengthening his case for a place in next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
The 36-year old Marcus Stoinis do not have central contract over the last year and featured for Australia in November 2024.
He announced his retirement from ODIs in February this year but has remained active on the global T20 leagues, playing key roles for Punjab Kings in the IPL and Trent Rockets in The Hundred, both teams reaching the finals.
Stoinis faces tough competition for all-rounder’s role in middle order, with the emergence of Cameron Green, Tim David and Mitchell Owen all vying for similar spots.
Cameron Green will be missing the New Zealand series to priortise Sheffield Shield cricket to prepare for Ashes.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Owen has returned to the side after missing the final T20I and subsequent ODI series against South Africa due to concussion.
On the other hand, Matthew Short has recovered from the side strain he picked up in training in Jamaica ahead of the West Indies series in July.
Alex Carey and Aaron Hardie drop out after serving as injury replacements against South Africa. Nathan Ellis will be missing the six-day tour on paternity leave.
Australia will be miss the service of Mitchell Starc (T20I retirement) and Pat Cummins (injury).
The T20I series will be played on October 01, 03 and 04 at Mount Maknuni.
