Shardul Thakur has raised concerns over how little attention some cricketers receive regarding workload management. He stressed that players often play for months, but there is little consideration for the toll it takes on their bodies. The debate around workload has grown in recent years, with Jasprit Bumrah’s case being the most discussed. Bumrah, India’s spearhead, has won matches consistently but has also been sidelined due to injuries. This has led the selectors and management to manage him. During the England tour, he played three of the five Tests.

Thakur, on the other hand, pointed out that not every player receives such close monitoring. He explained that he often relies on physios and Strength & Conditioning coaches to maintain his fitness.

“Many times we are taken for granted, and the management doesn’t always operate in our favour. No one actually comes and asks how our bodies are after playing for months. I’ve been looking after myself with the help of physios and Strength & Conditioning coaches,” he said.

Thakur emphasised the importance of balance, noting that while players should remain committed to playing, occasional breaks are essential for maintaining physical well-being.

“It’s ultimately about playing cricket. I’m not suggesting that players should constantly skip matches, but taking occasional breaks now and then really helps the body.

“Once you step onto the field, workload management isn’t something you can dwell on, because the match situation takes charge. When you’re playing, the expectation is to give your absolute best. Whatever energy you have left, you need to put it all out there,” he concluded.
