Sanath Jayasuriya has called for fine-tuning of rules, after the super over controversy involving Dasun Shanaka during the Asia Cup 2025 clash against India on Friday.
The Super 4s clash ended in a draw, which meant they had to play a super over to obtain a result. Sri Lanka came out to bat first and lost the wicket of Kusal Perera early.
Arshdeep Singh fourth delivery was a searing yorker outside off stump. Dasun Shanaka went for a big swing but failed to make any contact.
Arshdeep Singh instantly appealed for a caught behind and after a short pause, umpire Gazi Sohel signalled out.
Despite being given out, Shanaka tried to take a run even as the ball was caught safely in Sanju Samson’s hands.
The Indian wk-batter sending a direct under-arm throw at the striker’s end end with Shanaka well short of his ground.
For a small brief moment, it seemed that Sri Lanka’s Super Over was finished. However, the laws of the game came into play. Since Shanaka has been declared out for caught behind, the ball was considered dead at that point, which means Samson’s throw will not count according to Law 20.1.1.3.
With Shanaka opted for a review, Ultraedge revealed no connection between bat and ball and Shanaka at crease and nullifying the apparent run-out.
Speaking to the reporters, Sanath Jayasuriya said that the chaos stemmed from the rules as it is always the first decision that counts and not the second one. The Sri Lanka coach said that this Loophole needs to be reviewed and redefined.
“I think that was the rules. According to the rules, if you appeal for the catch, then he Dasun had to go by the third umpire’s call, so it was the first decision that counts always, not the second one,” added Jayasuriya.
“So he went for the replay and it was not out. So that’s what happened. But I think, there are a few areas from this game they’ll have to look into to fine-tune a little bit of the rules,” said Sanath Jayasuriya.
He also spoke about the absence of Pathum nissanka during the super over. Jayasuriya explained the call and said that Nissanka was carrying a couple of injuries and they decided to not take a risk with him in the end.
“He was having hamstring and groin injuries during the last two games, and we were a little worried about him, and that is the reason we went with the left-hand and right-hand combination,” concluded Sanath Jayasuriya.
