The Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammad Siraj led India to a dominant victory in the 1st Test against the West Indies, played at Ahmedabad.

Jadeja impressed in the bowling department after smashing a sixth test century during India’s first innings.

He went on to pick four wickets, accompanied by Siraj’s 3-wicket haul, to help the side to secure a comfortable victory against the visitors.

Batting first, West Indies went on to get bowled out for 162 runs on the back of Mohammed Siraj’s four-wicket haul. He was accompanied by Jasprit Bumrah (3) and Kuldeep Yadav (2) to dismantle the West Indies line-up on day 01 itself.

Starting their innings, India had a decent start with losing their first wicket for 68 runs. Despite Sai Sudharsan’s dismissal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja made solid knocks putting India at control.

After KL Rahul made his 11th test century, Dhurv Jurel went on to score his maiden Test century.

With Jadeja and Sundar at crease, India finished strongly for 448/5 at Narendra Modi Stadium. After declaring their innings for 448/5 runs, India went on to bowl out West Indies for 146 runs in their second innings to secure a win by an innings and 140 runs.

Trailing the game by 286 runs after declared on their overnight score of 448 for 5, West Indies performed even worse in their second essay, being bowled out for 146 in 45.1 overs.

Jadeja struck early with dismissing campbell and Brandon King for 14 and 5, before claiming Shai Hope and Johann Layne as the batting line-up continued to collapse.

Siraj was equally effective, picking up three wickets including that of opener Chanderpaul, Justin Greaves and Jomel Warrican.

Kuldeep Yadav contributed 2 wickets while Washington Sundar accounted with dismissing Alick Athanaze.

India’s dominance further expanded with the fall of the wickets as the visitors lost first five wickets for 46 runs. Despite offering some resistance, with Alick Athanaze (38) and Justin Greaves (25).

Ravindra Jadeja was named the Player of the match. Speaking at the toss, Jadeja said, “Yeah, I have been working hard with my batting. We had a two-month off, there was no Test cricket or ODIs.”

“I was working on my fitness and I went to the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore, worked on my skills and fitness there. Yeah, absolutely (on his recent batting form). I had been batting at number 8 and 9 a few years ago but now I got my place at 6,” he further added.

“I have time to prepare myself and I can pace my innings. I don’t need to hurry, I don’t need to rush unnecessarily. I can go out there, take my time and just pace my innings. I always love playing on red soil pitches,” said Jadeja.

“It’s fun because as a spinner you get more turn and bounce. So, always as a spinner you want that. I think I was enjoying it and as I got to know that we are playing on a red soil, I thought it would be okay for batting and bowling as well. If the wicket is flat, you can score runs,” further added Ravindra Jadeja.

“If the ball is turning, then you can enjoy bowling on the red soil. Obviously I would like to thank the coach, captain and management and selectors because being a vice-captain you are always there as a team’s special member and that honour always pleased me,” Jadeja said.

“And yeah, whenever the team required, whatever suggestion or regarding anything, I am always there and happy to do it. No, I am still not there (on being asked if he was the leader of the spin bowling department),” he added.

“Ash was there. I am not the captain. Kuldeep has also played many games for India. Washi (Sundar) has also played many games. So I think all in all, everyone is experienced enough and there’s no need to give unnecessary suggestions to anyone. So everybody is working hard. Everyone is positive. That’s good to see,” Jadeja concluded.

The second test is scheduled to be played between October 10 and 14 at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
