After Test cricket, the captaincy of the Indian team has changed in ODI International and the responsibility of Shubman Gill has come on his shoulders. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the ODI and T20 team for the tour of Australia on Saturday 4 October. During this time, the change in the leadership of the ODI team was also approved and Gill was also made the new captain of this format in place of Rohit Sharma. After getting the captaincy, Gill also expressed his intentions what he wants from this team. But why was Gill chosen for this role?
In Ahmedabad on Saturday, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar announced the captaincy of Gill at a press conference. This announcement was made one hour after the end of the first Test match between Indo-West Indies played in Ahmedabad itself. Team India won this Test match within just 3 days under the captaincy of Shubman Gill. This was his first match as a Test captain on Indian land and he got success here. In such a situation, this day was doubled for Gill, where he won the team inside the field and the doers of the board selected him for a new responsibility.
With the captaincy of Team India, Shubman Gill cleared his intentions and announced that his eyes are on World Cup 2027, for which preparations will start now. Describing the captaincy of Team India as the dream of every player, Gill described it as a proud moment. In a video post from BCCI, Gill said, "It is the greatest honor to lead your country in ODI cricket. To captain a team that has done so well, it is a matter of pride for me and I hope that I will be able to do well."
Referring to the World Cup, Gill said, "We have to play 20 ODIs before the World Cup and the final goal is the World Cup to be held in South Africa. So all the players we play and all the players will play, everyone will try to perform our best so that we can take a good season before the World Cup and then we can get ready for the World Cup and then we can win the World Cup."
But the question is, why did BCCI choose Shubman Gill for this role? The selectors and team management also had a good option in the form of Shreyas Iyer, who has won his captaincy in Limited Over Cricket from Dopy Cricket to League like IPL. At the same time, he was also given the command of India-A for the ODI series against Australia-A. In such a situation, he was also a good contender. But still why did Gill get responsibility in another format?
Ajit Agarkar told about this in a press conference and said that it was not right to keep different captains for the three formats. He said that it is not easy for the selectors and head coaches to keep pace with different captains. Therefore, Gill was also chosen in this format. He also impressed his captaincy in the Test series in England.
