Overview:
According to media reports, the assignment against the Aussies would be Virat and Rohit’s last in international cricket.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to action after the two were picked for the ODI series against Australia, starting October 19. However, Rohit has been sacked from captaincy, with Shubman Gill replacing him.
Ajit Agarkar, the BCCI Chief selector, refused to commit that their inclusion has settled the debate about their career beyond the matches against the Men in Yellow.
According to media reports, the assignment against the Aussies would be Virat and Rohit’s last in international cricket. The BCCI wanted the two to play domestic cricket to stay in contention for the 2027 global tournament.
Agarkar broke his silence on the matter, saying that he does not know if the Australia tour would be Rohit and Virat’s in the national jersey.
“They are playing one format and we have picked them for the matches against Australia. I don’t think we need to discuss the 2027 World Cup at the moment. You can’t think beyond the Australia series, as the team has been picked for the tour. They will have to score runs like they have been doing all these years,” he said.
Agarkar is expecting them to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. “We made it clear that players will have to play domestic cricket when they are not playing international cricket. You will have to keep yourself sharp if you have a long break. The guys should play domestic cricket when they are free,” he concluded.
Kohli’s last List A match was for Delhi in 2010, while Rohit represented Mumbai in 2018.
