A new chapter has been written in Indian cricket. Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s 28th ODI captain. This major decision has been taken before the three -match ODI series against Australia in October, which will start India’s 2027 ODI World Cup visit.

Great history of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy

Rohit Sharma captained Team India for four years and during this time gave India many historic victories. Under his leadership, India traveled to the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and also won the Champions Trophy 2025 title, which came after a 12 -year long drought. Rohit captained 56 ODIs, in which his win percentage was 75%. Now, he has been freed from captaincy and he will only play in the team as a batsman.

New responsibility on Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill, who is now 26 years old, has been elected the new ODI captain of India. This post is a big challenge for him, because till now Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni have been the two captains who have given India the success of winning the ODI World Cup. With this new leadership, Gill will have to lead the Indian team in the 2027 World Cup, and it can prove to be a significant turn for his career.

Candidates left in the race for captaincy

  1. Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya had all the qualities to become captain. Under his captaincy, Gujarat Titans won the IPL 2022 title and they also captain Mumbai Indians. Pandya is a great all -rounder who has left his mark in the cricket world with his batting, bowling, and leadership ability. Nevertheless, the BCCI kept him out of the captaincy.
  2. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer could also get a chance to become ODI captain, as Kolkata Knight Riders won the trophy at IPL 2024 under his captaincy. Iyer has also scored 2845 runs in Indian ODI cricket and has an average of 48.22. Nevertheless, the BCCI limited him as vice -captains, while there was also an option to make him a captain.
  3. Rishabh Pant
The leadership capacity of wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant could also be seen, although the BCCI did not give him this responsibility. Along with his explosive batting and wicketkeeping, the young Team India led by Pant could have strengthened.

Making Shubman Gill the new ODI captain of the Indian team is a big step, and it shows that the BCCI is making its team’s strategy keeping in mind the future. While some major contenders are excluded from the captaincy, India’s journey under Gill’s captaincy will definitely be exciting, especially when the preparations for the 2027 World Cup have started.
