Despite his brilliant performance in the Champions Trophy, Varun Chakraborty did not get a place in the ODI team against Australia. He described the decision of the selectors as correct according to the circumstances. Gautam Gambhir had advised him to bowl long spells and improve his batting. Varun will be included in the T20 team.
Delhi: Team India’s spinner Varun Chakraborty did not express any displeasure at not being selected in the team for the ODI series against Australia. He said that he fully understands the decision of the selectors and accepts the decision. He also said that he hopes to make a place in every team, but the final decision lies with the selectors.
Varun had performed well in the recently held Champions Trophy. He took nine wickets in three matches, which included five wickets once. Despite this, he was not selected in the team for the Australia tour. He was included in the team as a replacement for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the Champions Trophy.
This time the selectors have included Kuldeep Yadav, Akshar Patel and Washington Sundar in the team as spin options. Experienced players like Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakraborty have been left out. This time the command of the team has been handed over to Shubman Gill.
Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar said that there is no need for more spin options for the matches played in Australia. He said that there is not much scope for experimentation in a series of only three matches and the team has been prepared according to the pitches.
On the occasion of CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai, Varun said that he always hopes to be selected in the team, but the selectors have to take decisions according to the pitch and conditions. He also said that communication in the team has been very clean, due to which every player knows his role.
Gambhir also advised Varun to improve his batting. He said that in domestic cricket he should bat higher and improve his batting. This can increase the chances of selection in the ODI team.
Even though Varun has been dropped from the ODI team, he will remain a part of India’s T20 team. India will play a five-match T20 series in Australia from October 29 to November 8.
