Varun Chakravarthy, a standout performer in India’s Champions Trophy win, has been left out of the ODI squad for the Australia series. The spinner from Tamil Nadu addressed the situation and supported the selectors’ decision, dismissing any controversy regarding his absence. The series is scheduled to begin on October 19.
India’s 15-player squad is led by Shubman Gill and features three spinners — Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakravarthy, both part of the Champions Trophy squad, have not been included.
After announcing the squad in Ahmedabad, the selection committee chairman, Ajit Agarkar, clarified the decision. He noted that India would only need three spinners for the Australia tour.
“Brother, I expect to be in every team, but ultimately, the selectors have their own reasons and thoughts. Maybe the pitches in Australia don’t favour my style of bowling. Even during the Champions Trophy, I was called in as a replacement for Yashasvi Jaiswal,” Varun said.
“It really comes down to the conditions. I may be ready, but what the pitch requires is something else entirely,” he added.
Varun played a key role in India’s unbeaten Asia Cup, taking seven wickets at an average of 20.42 and an economy rate of 6.50.
