Sourav Ganguly said that Rohit Sharma’s departure from ODI captaincy is not a big deal because there comes a time in the career of every veteran player when change is necessary. He called handing over the captaincy to Shubman Gill as the right decision and advised Rohit to play domestic cricket.
Delhi: Former Team India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has reacted to Rohit Sharma’s removal from ODI captaincy. He said that this is a part of the game and it happens towards the end of every big player’s career.
Shubman Gill has now been made the ODI captain in place of Rohit Sharma. However, Rohit is still a part of the team for the Australia tour, but as a normal player. Ganguly said while talking to India Today that this is probably a decision taken by mutual consent between BCCI and Rohit and not a direct decision.
Ganguly said on Rohit stepping down from captaincy
Ganguly said, “I don’t think this is any kind of dismissal. Rohit must have been talked to. He has won the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Performance has no role in this. Rohit will be 40 in the year 2027 and this is a big age in the game.”
Giving the example of himself and Rahul Dravid, Sourav said, “This happened with me, with Dravid too. In future, it will happen with Shubman Gill too. There comes a time in the game, when further preparations have to be started. Gill is a talented player and the decision to give him captaincy seems right.”
When Ganguly was asked whether Rohit and Kohli could play till the 2027 World Cup, he said that it would completely depend on their fitness and dedication towards the game. He said that it is important to play domestic cricket to stay in the matches and get back in form.
