New Delhi, 12 October (Read News). Chief Justice of India BR Gavai said that the true meaning of justice lies in protecting the weakest. The rule of law should serve as an instrument of fairness, dignity and equality. Giving his own example, he said that his life shows the transformative power of equality. How constitutional safeguards, after being born in a marginalized community, ensured not only security but also respect, opportunity and recognition.
Addressing the session on “Role of lawyers and courts in promoting diversity and inclusion” at the “La Asia” conference held in Hanoi, Vietnam on Saturday, Chief Justice BR Gavai called for stronger efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the judicial system. According to the report published in Bar & Bench, Chief Justice BR Gavai said that for me, being born in a lower-caste family meant that I was not born untouchable. Considering my dignity equal to that of any other citizen, the Constitution has ensured not only security but also respect, opportunity and recognition.
Recalling the influences of Gautam Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and his father RS Gavai on his life, Chief Justice Gavai said that Dr. Ambedkar showed that law should be transformed from an instrument of hierarchy to an instrument of equality and his father instilled in him the values of justice and compassion. He said that when law protects dignity it can change the course of a person’s life. For him, the idea of diversity and inclusion is not an abstract utopia but the aspiration of millions of citizens.
