England secured a thrilling 4-run victory in the final of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 clash against India, played on October 19 at Indore.
By this win, they become the third team to qualify for the semi-finals, making India’s hopes for the knockout stages more difficult.
Despite the knocks from Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma, India failed to chase the target and suffered their third consecutive loss in the tournament.
After choosing to bat first, Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones opened the innings for England while Renuka Singh opened the bowling attack.
England made a decent start with scoring 44 runs in the powerplay. Deepti got the first breakthrough picking the wicket of Beaumont for 22 runs and went on to bag the wicket of Amy Jones for 56 runs.
However, Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt went onto stictch a solid 113 run partnership before Shree Charani dismissed England captain for 38 runs.
On the other hand, Knight went on to slam century and got dismissed before being dismissed on a run out.
After Shree Charani bagged the wicket Sophia Dunkley for 15 runs, Deepti Sharma bagged the wicket of Alice for 2 runs. Charlotte Dean’s 19* runs in the end has helped the England to post 288 runs in their 50 over innings.
Deepti Sharma went on to pick four wickets while Shree Charani completed her spell with 2 wickets.
In the pursuit of chasing 289 runs, Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana opened the innings while Lauren Bell opened the bowling attack.
Despite two quick wickets of Pratika Rawal and Harleen Deol within the powerplay, India posted a 42 runs in the powerplay.
However, Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur went on to take on England bowlers, posting a solid partnership taking the side towards victory.
Nat Sciver-Brunt went on give a crucial breakthrough dismissing Harmanpreet Kaur for 70 runs. India lost their 3rd wicket for 167 runs. Deepti Sharma who came to bat joined Smriti Mandhana to stitch a solid partnership before Mandhana lost her wickets to Linsey Smith.
Meanwhile, Deepti Sharma went on to post her 17th ODI fifty before Sophie Ecclestone went on to sent the Indian all-rounder back to dugout.
After Richa Ghosh’s dismissal for 8 runs, Amanjot Kaur and Sneh Rana went on to score 18* and 10* runs and failed to chase the target, as India scored only 284 runs and lost the game by 4 runs.
England retains the second spot while India is on the fourth spot in the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 points table. Heather Knight was named as the Player of the match.
England Women will play their next game against Australia Women on October 22 at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore.
