Former Indian cricketer Abhishek Nayar appreciated Shubman Gill’s gesture of spending time with Rohit Sharma during the rain break in the first ODI against Australia but jokingly said he should avoid sharing popcorn with him next time. The two were seen sitting together in the Optus Stadium dressing room in Perth on Sunday, October 19, sharing a bucket of popcorn while waiting for the rain to stop.
Batting first in overcast conditions, both Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill found it difficult to handle the movement of the new ball. The Australian pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood kept them under pressure early on. Rohit scored only eight runs on his return to international cricket, while Gill, in his first ODI as captain, managed 10 before being dismissed.
After both openers fell inside the first powerplay, they were seen deep in conversation as rain delays continued to interrupt play. Abhishek Nayar, who has worked closely with Rohit on his fitness and technique in the past, humorously remarked that Gill should probably avoid offering popcorn to the former captain next time.
“In my view, the way Shubman Gill is making an effort to ensure Rohit Sharma feels comfortable is truly admirable, Sometimes, even after spending years together and knowing that he has supported you, once you become his captain, there can be a bit of awkwardness in the dressing room. So, it’s important to show that you still value and care for him,” Abhishek Nayar said on Star Sports.
“He’s doing everything he can to support Rohit and help him succeed. As long as he avoids offering him popcorn, he’s on the right track,” he added
