Ricky Ponting has urged fans not to place too much focus on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s poor starts in the opening ODI in Perth. He remains confident that both players will rediscover their form and play key roles in India’s build-up to the 2027 World Cup.

The much-anticipated comebacks ended in disappointment as Rohit fell for 8 off 14 balls, while Kohli was dismissed for a duck. The conditions at Optus Stadium favoured pace, offering plenty of bounce and lateral movement, which made life difficult for batters.

Rohit looked to be proactive, striking one boundary, but was consistently challenged by the sharp new-ball spells from Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc. His innings ended when a rising delivery caught him by surprise and took the edge. Kohli, meanwhile, never looked settled. A wide delivery outside off-stump tempted him into a loose shot, and he was caught at point, handing Starc a key wicket.

While their early dismissals drew attention, seasoned observers know better than to judge proven performers on a single game. Both Kohli and Rohit are aware of the expectations and will be eager to return to form quickly to reaffirm their positions and answer any doubts about their continued presence in the side.

Speaking after the match, Ponting highlighted that both players are coming back after extended breaks and need time to adjust.

“The key is getting back into rhythm and finding your tempo. After a break, it takes time to readjust to the pace and flow of 50-over cricket. I think both of them will return to form soon,” he said.

“I always say this, you never write off champion players. I regard Virat as the best 50-over batter I’ve ever watched.”

India and Australia are set to meet again at the Adelaide Oval on 23 October.
