Delhi: In the first ODI match played on Sunday at the Bay Oval Stadium in Mount Maunganui, England captain Harry Brook created a wonderful storm with the bat. He played an explosive inning of 135 runs, which included 11 sixes and 9 fours. However, even his brilliant innings could not save England from defeat. New Zealand won by 4 wickets with 80 balls remaining and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Batting first, the England team was limited to 223 runs in 35.2 overs. The beginning of the team was no less than a nightmare. In just the second over the score became 2 wickets for 4 runs and after some time it became 56 for 6 wickets. The top order completely disintegrated. Ben Duckett (2), Joe Root (2), Jacob Bethel (2), Jos Buttler (4) and Sam Curran (6) all proved to be flops.
In such difficult circumstances, captain Harry Brook took charge and showed aggressive behavior against the New Zealand bowlers. He not only batted brilliantly but also saved England from complete collapse. Brook completed the second century of his ODI career and this was also his highest score in ODI. During this innings he completed his 1000 runs in ODIs.
Brook made an important partnership of 87 runs with Jamie Overton (46) for the seventh wicket. After this, he along with Luke Wood (5) added 57 runs for the last wicket and took England to a respectable score.
New Zealand also had a bad start while chasing the target. The team lost three wickets for just 24 runs. Kane Williamson, who returned to the team after seven months, was out on the very first ball. However, Daryl Mitchell (78 not out) and Michael Bracewell (51) changed the course of the match by adding 92 runs for the fifth wicket.
Joe Root dropped an easy catch of Bracewell at slip for 2 runs, while Mitchell got a lease of life for 33 runs. After this, both the batsmen tired the England bowlers and gave the team a comfortable victory.
