Seraikela, 27 October (Read). There was chaos among the devotees during Chhath Puja on Monday evening in front of Pathardih Biswas Bhata under Chandil police station area of Seraikela-Kharsawan district, when a child drowned in the Swarnarekha river while offering Arghya. Two people jumped into the water to save the child, but unfortunately all three drowned in the depths of the river.
As soon as information about the incident was received, there was panic on the spot. Local people immediately informed the police and administration. Chandil police station, NDRF team and local divers jointly started the rescue operation. After several hours of effort, the child’s body was recovered late in the evening, while the search for the two adults continued till late night. However, divers say that due to the depth and strong current of the river, the chances of survival of both are very less.
Eyewitnesses said that due to deep potholes in the river, people suddenly went into the depths and could not come out. Local villagers said that there were not adequate security arrangements at the ghat and the nature of the river has become dangerous due to illegal sand excavation.
There is an atmosphere of mourning in the entire area due to the incident. The villagers have demanded the administration to tighten security at the ghats during big festivals like Chhath and to stop illegal sand lifting from the river, so that such painful incidents can be avoided in future.
SP Mukesh Kumar Lunayat said that three people have drowned. The body of one has been found, the search for two is ongoing.
