Overview:

Averaging over 60 in ODIs and 71.5 in T20Is this year, his dominant form has reignited calls for a return to the Test side.

Mitchell Marsh gave a cheeky response to talk of a potential Test comeback ahead of the Ashes, following Andrew McDonald’s recent comments. Marsh hasn’t played in a Test since the Boxing Day match against India and has since been focusing on white-ball formats.

As Australia’s T20I captain and stand-in ODI skipper, Mitchell Marsh has impressed across formats, just as he did in the recent series against India. Averaging over 60 in ODIs and 71.5 in T20Is this year, his dominant form has reignited calls for a return to the Test side.

Michael Vaughan has joined those calling for Mitchell Marsh’s return to the Test side, saying his attacking approach fits the Bazball mindset. Speaking ahead of the India T20Is, Marsh took the suggestion lightly, joking that he’d been hoping for a month off instead.

“I was actually hoping for a month off after this, to be honest. I haven’t really thought about it much,” Marsh said with a smile.

“It’s been a busy period with the white-ball tour, and right now, my focus is on this series. I love playing for Western Australia, so we’ll see how things go once it’s done,” he added

Andrew McDonald has left the door open for Mitchell Marsh’s red-ball comeback, saying the all-rounder could still be in the frame for an Ashes call-up.

“We haven’t given up on Mitch Marsh’s Test career. In terms of preparation, it might come through white-ball cricket or possibly a few Shield games after the white-ball fixtures if he’s not part of the initial squad. That would give him a chance to push his case,” McDonald concluded.
