Madrid, October 30 (Read). Amidst a major legal battle in European football, the court of Madrid, the capital of Spain, on Wednesday rejected the appeal of The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) to the Super League. After this, Real Madrid Club has announced to demand “large scale” compensation from UEFA.
In fact, in the year 2021, 12 top clubs of Europe – including Real Madrid and Barcelona – had jointly presented a plan to form a Super League. However, the project collapsed within days due to intense opposition from fans of English clubs and threats from UEFA and FIFA.
In December 2023, the European Court had said in its decision that the ban imposed on the Super League is against European law. After this, a Spanish judge also said that by opposing the Super League, UEFA and FIFA disrupted free competition and abused their dominance.
Now the Madrid court has rejected the appeals filed by UEFA as well as La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation. However, the scope of the court’s decision is believed to be limited because the rules have been completely changed in the meantime.
Expressing happiness over this decision, Real Madrid said in an official statement, “This decision confirms that UEFA has seriously violated the European Union’s rules of free competition in the Super League case.”
The club further said it would “continue to act in the interests of world football and fans, while also seeking adequate damages from UEFA.”
