NEW DELHI: India’s luck at the toss, no matter who the captain is or whether it’s men’s or women’s cricket, refuses to change, as Harmanpreet Kaur lost the toss against Australia in the ICC Women’s World Cup semifinal on Thursday in Navi Mumbai.
Australia skipper Alyssa Healy, who returned alongside Sophie Molineux, elected to bat against India in the second semifinal. The winner of this game will take on South Africa in the summit clash on Sunday.
For India, Shafali Verma came in for Pratika Rawal, who has been ruled out of the tournament, while Uma Chetry and Harleen Deol make way for Richa Ghosh and Kranti Gaud.
Harmanpreet’s tough luck
Harmanpreet has found herself on the winning side only once in the last 10 ODIs, while the game against Bangladesh at the same venue last Sunday ended in a no result.
In the ongoing World Cup, both India and South Africa have had little luck with the coin, losing 7 out of their 8 tosses so far.
England hold the record for losing the most tosses in a single edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup, having lost 9 out of 13 in 1982. India followed closely in the same year, losing 8 out of 12 tosses. Sri Lanka endured a similar run of misfortune in 2000, losing all 7 tosses they contested.
