The start of play in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 final between India and South Africa has been delayed due to heavy rains at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

With the toss delayed for over an hour and relentless showers denying the ground staff an opportunity to get the ground ready, the fear of a rain-reduced match began to emerge.

In general, if play does not start after an hour’s delay, overs will be lost gradually, despite there being 60 minutes of extra time allocated to all matches throughout the event.

However, according to ICC rules, a total of 120 minutes of extra time will be allocated for the semifinal and final, meaning overs will only be reduced if play cannot take place after a two-hour delay.

ICC 13.7.3 reads: “There shall be 60 minutes of extra time allocated to all matches throughout the event except for the Semi-Finals and Final, which will be allocated 120 minutes of extra time.”

However, if the rains do not permit both teams to complete the 20 overs required to denote a game in ODIs, a reserve day will come into play.
