India emerged victorious in the Women's World Cup 2025 final against South Africa at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2, ending their long wait for the coveted title.

After walking onto the ceremonial stage to collect the ODI World Cup trophy from ICC chairman Jay Shah, Harmanpreet Kaur tried to touch his feet, but the ex-BCCI secretary refused out of respect for the India captain. He bowed down and shook his head, stopping the Indian skipper from doing so.

Shah was in attendance, alongside many other distinguished guests from cricket and other fields. Former India captains Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar were also a part of the monumental occasion in Indian cricket.

After falling short in the finals in 2005 and 2017, India were desperate to bag the silverware when they faced the Proteas on Sunday. The Women in Blue didn't win the toss and were invited to bat first by Laura Wolvaardt.

Shafali Verma, who came into the squad midway through the tournament as an injury replacement for Pratika Rawal, smashed a career-high 87 off 78 balls while Deepti Sharma made a run-a-ball 58 to help India post 298/7.

In reply, Wolvaardt played brilliantly to score a 98-ball 101. However, her fellow batters couldn't offer her the kind of support she would have wanted. Deepti Sharma wreaked havoc with her accurate display of off-spin bowling and accounted for five wickets. South Africa were bowled out for 246 in 45.3 overs, losing the match by 52 runs.
