According to her, Nigar Sultana hits the players regularly, and some of the cricketers are not interested in playing for the national team because of the treatment.
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty is facing allegations of beating junior cricketers. Jahanara Alam, who is not a part of the women’s team, has spoken against Nigar and the Bangladesh Cricket World following the team’s ordinary performance at the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. Alam accused the skipper of assaulting the players and creating a toxic environment in the dressing room. However, the national cricket board has denied the claims, calling them baseless.
Alam, who last played for the country in December 2024, made the claims during an interview with Bangladesh-based newspaper Kaler Kantho. According to her, Nigar Sultana hits the players regularly, and some of the cricketers are not interested in playing for the national team because of the treatment.
“This is not new. Joty beats up junior players. She didn’t spare them even during the World Cup. Some of the players have informed me about the mistreatment. Even on the tour of Dubai, she slapped one of the juniors,” Alam told Kaler Kantho.
Alam has played 52 ODIs and 83 T20Is, taking 108 wickets.
Alam mentioned that favouritism and internal politics are impacting cricket in Bangladesh, and the senior players are being sidelined.
“I am not alone. Everyone is suffering. Only one or two people get good facilities. The process of eliminating the seniors started in 2021. I was made captain of one of the three teams in the Bangladesh game. The two others were Jyoti (Nigar Sultana) and Sharmin Sultana. The pressure on the senior players started from there on.”
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has denied all the allegations, calling her comments deliberate and ill-intentioned. Bangladesh finished seventh in the eighth-team World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka.
