AUS vs IND 2025: Shubman Gill won't take long to transform into three-format player, says Shane Watson (Source: BCCI)

Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson has commended Shubman Gill's technique and feels that it will not take a lot of time to adapt to all three formats. Gill is the latest to be handed the Test and ODI captaincy of the Indian team, and is also the current vice-captain in the T20Is, where Suryakumar Yadav is the full-time skipper.

Watson commented on how every player takes some time to adjust to different scenarios and conditions.

He called Gill a 'ridiculously talented batter' and predicted that it won't be long till Gill is seen as a perfectly capable batter across all formats.

"It does take time (to make adjustments), and it's through trial-and-error that you really realise exactly what you need to do to make those adjustments, and playing in different conditions as well. Shubman is a ridiculously talented batter. He's got an amazing technique. It's not going to take him long at all to be able to really navigate his way through the different formats because when someone is as highly skilled as he is, it's not going to take him too long," stated Watson, as quoted by India Today.

Watson also conceded that switching formats, like Gill has been doing, is not an easy task. However, he noted that more game time under Gill's belt will transform him into a much more comfortable zone in the time to come.

"It definitely is a challenge, and the more you do it, the better you get at really understanding the little adjustments that you have to make to your technique, to your game plan, your mindset around each format to be able to then get into the best version of you every time you have to make that adjustment," he added.

After a stellar five-match tour of England in which Gill amassed 754 runs across 10 innings, it has not been the smoothest ride for him. Gill scored only 127 runs in seven matches in India's title-winning Asia Cup run in the United Arab Emirates.

Coming to the ODI series against the Aussies, his scores read 10, 9 and 24. Barring the first T20I in which he remained not-out on 37 off 20, Gill has not been able to capitalize on his starts, scoring only 5 and 15 in the second and third T20I. The Men in Blue are scheduled to play the fourth and fifth T20Is on November 6 and November 8, respectively.
