India opener Shubman Gill did not set the stage on fire in the recently concluded T20 International (T20I) series against Australia. He started the series off with a bright 37* in Canberra and in the final game in Brisbane, he slammed a stroke-filled 29*, before rain stopped play on both occasions.
However, between those knocks, there was not much to speak about, despite top-scoring at the Carrara Oval with 46, but he took 39 balls to get there.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra reckons there will be a question mark over Gill's place in the T20I side, given that the likes of Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal are waiting in the wings, but at the same time reckons that the upcoming series against South Africa will be vital.
"Shubman Gill was batting really well in Canberra, and it rained.
After that, he was batting well in the last match in Brisbane, and it rained. Rain came both times he was actually batting well. He looked to be in good form many times in this series, but those many runs weren't scored," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
"This tour was like a damp squib for him, where it was expected that he would stamp his authority, but that didn't happen.
In fact, he has come back with just question marks everywhere. I, personally, don't feel there are question marks. The home series will give us a little more insight, but the questions will remain because the Indian team plays cricket like that."
The five-match T20Is against South Africa will get underway from December 9 onwards. Before that, Gill will lead India in Tests and ODIs, starting November 14 (Friday).
