Indian women’s cricket team won the ODI World Cup for the first time. Sunil Gavaskar said that do not be disappointed if the promises are not fulfilled. He cited the experience of the 1983 men’s team and warned that many people take advantage of the victory only for publicity.
Delhi: On November 2, the Indian women’s cricket team, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, won the Women’s ODI World Cup title for the first time. They defeated South Africa in the final. With this victory, Team India also ended the years-long ICC trophy drought.
After this historic victory, ICC announced to give prize money of about Rs 40 crore to the team. BCCI also announced a reward of Rs 51 crore. Apart from this, leaders and political parties of many states have also announced different rewards for their players.
Amidst all this happiness, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has given an important advice for the Indian women’s team. He has said that if you do not get any promised reward, do not be disappointed. He believes that many shameless people are just taking advantage of your victory and using it for their own publicity.
Gavaskar wrote in his column, “In India, advertisers and brands quickly start promoting themselves by associating themselves with the winning players. If you look at the advertisements and hoardings printed on the team’s victory, you will know that they are only trying to promote their brands and are not giving the players the respect or rewards that they should get.”
He told the women’s team, “There is no need to panic or be disappointed if any promises are not fulfilled. The real significance of their victory is that which makes the team and the country feel proud.”
The former captain also gave the example of the 1983 Men’s Cricket World Cup. He told that India had won the first ODI World Cup in 1983 and after that many promises were made, but they were not fully fulfilled. He said that even at that time the media was happy about big announcements and many people were busy enhancing their own shine.
