The International Cricket Council (ICC) is once again taking steps towards strengthening the ODI format. A league that was closed after the 2023 World Cup can start again. A plan to start this league from the year 2028 is under consideration. This league originally started in July 2020 and its aim was to save 50-over cricket. But it was rejected due to the busy calendar, due to which teams from smaller countries had to face losses.

This ODI league will start again

The International Cricket Council is planning to start the ODI Super League once again. This league of 13 teams was started to further improve the 50 over format which was gradually decreasing. Now this league is expected to start once again from the year 2028. However, this time how many teams will be a part of it is not decided yet. The group headed by former New Zealand batsman Roger Toews has informed this to the ICC Board and Chief Executive Committee.

An administrator told ESPN Cricinfo, 'Super League can help in reviving the 50-over format. Perhaps the problem is not that the format has completely ended, but the problem is finding the right structure.

What is ODI Super League?

The ODI Super League is held every two years and its aim is to increase the importance of 50-over matches. In its first edition, the Super League helped decide the names of the teams playing in the 2023 World Cup. In the Super League, each team plays three ODI matches against the other eight teams. Of these, there are four domestic and four external series. This means that each team will play a total of 24 ODI matches, which will give it a chance to make it to the next World Cup. Last time this league was held between 13 teams.

This league also has the advantage that teams outside the top 10 in the ranking will get a chance to play more ODI matches against top teams, which will help them improve their level. Apart from this, teams will also play ODI matches with each other outside the Super League. In some cases, they may play four or five matches in a series, but only three matches will count for Super League points.
