Team India’s all-rounder Akshar Patel said that the captain’s job is not to speak English but to understand the players. He told that it is wrong for people to think that only one who speaks English can become captain. Akshar said that language is not a barrier for the captain.
Delhi: Team India’s spin all-rounder and Delhi Capitals captain Akshar Patel said that the captain should not be selected on his English speaking ability or external personality. He said that there is often a misconception in India that only the player who speaks English well or looks confident is eligible to become the captain.
Akshar said, “People say that he is not captain material because he does not speak English. Hey, the captain’s job is not just to speak. His job is to understand the players, to know which player will perform well in which situation and how to get the best out of him for the team.”
Akshar said that it is wrong to give importance to language or personality in the selection of the captain. He said, “If we say that the captain should speak English or he should have a good personality, then it is just the thinking of the people. Language should not be a barrier for the captain.”
The star all-rounder further said, “Nowadays people form their opinion based on what they see on social media. How active someone is, how he speaks – decisions are taken on these things. Everyone starts giving their opinion as to who should become the captain and who should not.”
Akshar Patel said that as the captain of Delhi Capitals, he wants to maintain a fun atmosphere in the team, but at the same time professionalism is also important. “I want the atmosphere in the team to be light-hearted, but no one should take anything lightly. What is required to win the match should be done first. After that, we can have fun. If you have fun, you will play better,” Akshar said.
He further said that he does not follow any fixed pattern and trusts his decisions. “I am not a very experienced captain, but I am confident in my decisions. I definitely listen to the opinions of others, but I take the final decision only which I feel is right,” he said.
