Team India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant completed a fine diving catch to dismiss South Africa opener Aiden Markram on Day 1 (Friday, November 14) of the ongoing Test series opener at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah provided the hosts with a big breakthrough by removing the senior batter.
Markram scored 31 runs off 48 balls before losing his wicket. Bumrah bowled a short-of-length ball outside the off stump to kick off the 13th over. The South African batter looked to block it, but was undone by the extra bounce.
The ball brushed the shoulder of his bat, and Pant made no mistake behind the stumps.
Notably, Bumrah dismissed both the South African openers after the visitors elected to bat first. Ryan Rickelton (23 off 22) was the first one to depart, getting cleaned up with a peach of a delivery from around the wicket in the 11th over.
Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav got the better of South Africa captain Temba Bavuma (3 off 11) on the final ball of the 15th over. The Proteas skipper was caught at short-leg by Dhruv Jurel.
At the time of writing, South Africa were 99/3 after 24 overs, with Wiaan Mulder (18 off 32) and Tony de Zorzi (13 off 31) at the crease.
Rishabh Pant returned to India's Test playing XI after a four-month injury break.
The ongoing first Test marked the return of Rishabh Pant to India's Test team. The southpaw remained on the sidelines for around four months after suffering a foot injury in July.
He sustained the injury while batting in India's fourth Test of the away series against England. The 28-year-old was hit on the foot while attempting to play a reverse sweep off pacer Chris Woakes' bowling.
Pant returned to action last month as he captained India A in two unofficial Tests against South Africa A. He showed impressive form with the bat, hitting two half-centuries and finishing with 196 runs across four innings at an average of 49.
