Test cricket returned to Kolkata after a long wait of 6 years and already Team India did not disappoint the fans who reached Eden Gardens Stadium in large numbers. On the first day of the Test match against South Africa, Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with his fast bowling and took 5 wickets, destroying the batting of the World Test champion. However, Team India also failed to make a good start with the bat as the failure of young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal against South Africa continued here too.

The first match of the Test series started on Friday 14 November at Eden Gardens and South African captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bat first. But whatever happened after this could hardly have been imagined. First, South Africa's openers made a fast start of 57 runs in just 10.3 overs. It was not expected that the South African opener would bat so aggressively. But from here the African team could not make any big partnership and wickets kept falling gradually.

South Africa lost its first wicket for 57 runs and its entire innings collapsed for 159 runs. Such batting was not expected from the World Test Champion. But this happened and the reason for this was star fast bowler Bumrah, who single-handedly took 5 wickets out of these 10. It was Bumrah who took the first two wickets and then he also took the last two wickets of the innings. With the last wicket, Bumrah took 5 wickets in an innings for the 16th time in Test cricket. Apart from them, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammad Siraj also took 2 wickets each, while Akshar Patel got one success.

When it was Team India's turn, all eyes were on Yashasvi Jaiswal. This is because till now Jaiswal has given strong performance against almost all the teams against which he has got a chance to play in Test cricket. At least one half-century has come from his bat but he failed against South Africa. Last time on the South Africa tour, he was able to score only 50 runs in 4 innings. In such a situation, this was a big opportunity for him but even on the Indian pitch, his bat did not work against South Africa and he was bowled by Marco Janson.

After this, Washington Sundar came to bat at number three, who was selected in the playing-11 in place of Sai Sudarshan. This decision was being discussed continuously since the announcement of the team and coach Gautam Gambhir was also heavily criticized for this. But after coming to the crease, Sundar handled the innings with Rahul and during the batting of 14 overs, both of them added 19 runs. During this time, the spin pair of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer troubled both of them but still Team India did not suffer any loss and by the end of the day's play the score was 37 runs for 1 wicket.
