On Saturday, at the scenic Eden Gardens, Kolkata, South Africa overcame India by 30 runs in the first Test of the two-match series. Once India’s last wicket had fallen, Mohammed Siraj was sent back for a duck. A lovely scene took place when Jasprit Bumrah went to South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma and gave him a consoling side hug which was appreciated by all.

According to reports, Bumrah also apologized for a comment he had made earlier in the match. The incident occurred on the opening day during the 13th over of South Africa’s first innings, when a Bumrah delivery hit Bavuma on the pads. India appealed for LBW but the umpire ruled it not out.
As the Indian players discussed taking a DRS review, Bumrah made a cheeky remark about Bavuma’s height, reportedly using the Hindi word “bauna,” meaning “short” or “dwarf.” Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant were seen laughing, but the stump mic audio later sparked debate online.

Although the comment appeared playful, Bumrah seemingly felt it might have been misunderstood. After the match, he approached Bavuma to apologize politely, showcasing sportsmanship and clearing the air between the two captains.

In the game itself, India suffered a disappointing defeat. Chasing 124 in the fourth innings, they were bowled out for 104. Shubman Gill’s neck injury prevented him from batting, further weakening the home side’s chances.

For South Africa, Simon Harmer starred with four wickets. Marco Jansen removed both Indian openers, while Keshav Maharaj bagged two wickets. Washington Sundar top-scored for India before falling to Aiden Markram.

With this win, South Africa lead the series 1–0. The second and final Test will take place at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
