Rinku Singh was India’s best finisher but failed to find a place in the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Former players are questioning the logic of taking four spinners to the tournament as it has pushed Rinku into the reserve category. Irfan Pathan and Varun Aaron have criticized the selection panel for leaving out a player who could have finished the games for India instead of opting for four tweakers.
Rohan Gavaskar was sure of seeing the southpaw in the team, but he was disappointed. Gaurav Kapoor, the host of the show on Cricbuzz, was trying to justify Rinku’s snub, saying it could be due to recent form as the player hasn’t been able to set the stage on fire for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024.
Rohan said no to his claim. “I don’t think so. If you’re judging on those parameters, then what about Mohammed Siraj? He hasn’t taken wickets for RCB. What about Suryakumar Yadav? He hasn’t done anything. Rinku’s place was taken by Impact Player Rule, as that hasn’t allowed him to showcase his talent. Shivam Dube, the all-rounder, is going purely based on his batting form as he didn’t roll his arm over because of the rule,” Rohan Gavaskar said.
Virender Sehwag felt that some players are going purely based on reputation and experience. “The selectors haven’t taken the current form into consideration while naming some players. They are going because of their reputation and expereince,” he said.
