NEW DELHI: Australia have confirmed their playing XI for the first Test of the Ashes series, announcing two fresh faces for the Perth opener against England. With key players missing through injury, the side have backed in-form domestic performers as Steve Smith prepares to lead the side.

Weatherald and Doggett earn long-awaited call-ups

Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett have been handed their first Baggy Green caps after being named in Australia’s XI for the opening Ashes Test. This is the first time in many years that Australia will start an Ashes match with two debutants.

Weatherald comes in as an opening batsman and will partner Usman Khawaja at the top. The left-hander has been in good touch in domestic cricket and now gets his chance at Test level.

Doggett joins the bowling attack as an additional fast bowler. With Australia missing a few senior quicks, the 31-year-old right-arm pacer has been brought in to add depth alongside Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland.

The experienced core remains intact, with Labuschagne and Head set to marshal the middle order, Green returning to his all-round role, and Carey taking the gloves. Lyon continues as the frontline spinner, while Starc and Boland bring Ashes know-how to support Doggett in the pace unit.

Injury-hit Australia brace for England challenge

With Cummins and Hazlewood sidelined, Australia enter the series opener under a bit of pressure, but the squad believes the blend of experience and new energy gives them a strong platform. Smith’s leadership and the hunger of two debutants add an intriguing edge as the hosts look to land the first blow in the five-Test battle.
